My Journey
as a Working Dog Handler
I was trained by the police as a working dog handler and explosives detection dog handler. Over the years, I have accumulated more than 40 years of experience in raising and training working dogs and have furthered my expertise to become a specialist in explosives. For many years, I searched in vain for specialized books on police dog training. This wasn't just my experience; many police dog handlers and aspiring handlers faced the same challenge. So, I decided to put my knowledge in writing. Today, my books are available as reference materials in several police academy libraries.
About My Books:
Combining Methods for a New, Sustainable, Animal-Friendly Training
With Modern Working Dog Training (Part 1 - "Practice Meets Science" & Part 2 - "Practice – No Science in Itself"), I struck a chord with interested working dog handlers. My book "The World of Working Dogs in Protection Work – From Cynology to Practice" is a new edition that combines the best of the two previous successful volumes, diving even deeper into the specialized world of protection dogs. With my book "What Does Explosives Smell Like? for Dogs", I created a comprehensive guide for explosives detection dog handlers. In this book, all types of explosives are described in detail, and their significance for operational practice is explained. This guide has been expanded and replaced by The Scent of Terror – Tracking Down the Perpetrators.
I explain various training concepts in detail — many of which are still used in official settings — and provide a thorough insight into the training of working dogs in police, customs, and military contexts. I then combined these different training methods with the latest scientific findings to develop a new, optimal, sustainable, and animal-friendly approach to training working dogs.
